NATIONAL / PROVINCIAL (N/P)

Train to Train, Compete, Win

Age: Approximately 10 and Over

Group Standard: Swim BC Provincial Standards

Training Schedule: 8 x 1.5-2 hour practices/week

Dryland Training Schedule: 30 minutes activation before water sessions + Dryland Programming (TBD)

Competition Frequency: 1 to 2 competitions per month, including travel meets when included in schedule.

*Swimmers in the National / Provincial group are committed to the complete training schedule and competition calendar as laid out by their group coach.

Description:

Provincial group athletes begin to train for fitness while still focusing on the medley – all four strokes. They expand to more frequently include the 200m stroke events, the 400m individual medley and the distance (400m, 800m and 1500m) freestyle events. Open water options can be explored in the summer as well. As they improve they begin to work their way towards their Swim BC Divisional and Provincial Championships qualifying times. Our expectations of these swimmers are that they are able to attend all workouts, though they may also be participating in one other sport. Their roles in the club will also start to become that of a leader on top of a valuable member.

National group consists of swimmers who have Senior Open, Western Canadian, Canadian Junior Championship, and/or Canadian Senior National (Olympic Trials) qualifying times. These swimmers are now training to compete with their weekly, monthly and seasonal cycles preparing them for specific meets at the National or Junior International level. They must be committed to swimming at this point as their training is extensive and varied, and follow the program as it is laid out by the Head Coach.

Learn to Train

Age: Approximately 9-16

Group Standard: Must be able to swim all 4 strokes and have a one Swim BC Divisional Qualifying time.

Training Schedule: 6 x 1.5 hours practices/week

Dryland Training Schedule: 15-30 minutes activation before water sessions + Dryland Programming (TBD)

Competition Frequency: 1 competitions per month, including travel meets when included in schedule.

Description: Age Group Gold builds and expands on the skills established in AG Blue. These swimmers are medley focused and LMR qualified with advanced skills in all four strokes, though they might need extra work on one or two strokes. There is higher exposure to longer events such as 200m free/back/breast/fly and 400Free/IM. This group works to qualify for Swim BC Divisional and Provincial Championships and are learning how to train hard and use their technical skills to swim fast. Swimmers begin to cross train once a week with Delta Gymnastics and commit to more time in the water including early mornings.

Learn to Train

Age: Approximately 8-14

Group Standard: Must be able to swim all 4 strokes and complete 200 IM

Training Schedule: 5 x 1-1.5 hour practices/week

Dryland Training Schedule: 15-30 minutes activation before water sessions.

Competition Frequency: 1 competition per month in the LMR region.

Description: Age Group Blue swimmers begin to fine tune their technique for all four strokes while also learning how to apply what they learn in a competition, aiming to swim the 200m Individual Medley in less than 4 minutes. This qualifies them for the *LMR (Lower Mainland Regional) level swim meets. Extra emphasis is put on how to read sets and intervals, use the pace clock, swimming in a lane with many other athletes, and gradually exposing them to longer durations of training. These swimmers practice 4-5 times per week and participate in at least one swim meet each month aiming to qualify for the Swim BC Divisional Championships. Our expectation for these swimmers is that they are able to attend a minimum number of workouts, while also participating actively in other sports.

Competition Frequency: WDSC Hosted Meets and PASS Meets

Description: Junior Dolphins Gold builds upon the skills established in Junior Dolphins Blue with swimmers committing to slightly more water time and learning to maintain the fundamentals for longer distances of swimming. We broaden the curriculum to include the refinement of medley swimming (all four strokes), legal turns, dive starts plus basic understanding of coaches’ terminology and use of the pace clock. JDG swimmers are encouraged to attend all 5 PASS meets in the season as well as the WDSC home meet in January.

Group Standard: Must be able to swim 15m unassisted. Comfortable and able to swim in deep water (deep end of pool).

Competition Frequency: WDSC Hosted Meets

Description: Our entry level novice group - the Junior Dolphins program is a great place for young swimmers to learn swimming and get introduced to competitive strokes starting with coordination, body awareness, the four swim strokes, and other basic competitive skills. A fun team environment with no emphasis placed on performance! We emphasize the social aspect of swimming with games and teamwork activities. Junior Dolphins experience racing at intraclub ’Mini Meets’ where they get to know each other and the older swimmers in the club. This is a great time for them to discover the joys of swimming while being involved in an organized sport. Interested in swimming during the Summer? Junior Dolphins runs September to April.

Competition Frequency: Competitions are option, and swimmers have an opportunity to swim in the WDSC Hosted Meets.

Description: Strength & Conditioning is designed for those who wish to pursue competitive swimming or swimming for health reasons while also managing other time commitments. This group is our 'Active for Life' initiative, we believe that swimming is a sport that has benefits for all. Swimmers are encouraged to attend one competition - our WDSC home meet. A great introduction to swim club for teenage athletes, it can also be used as a cross-training for other sports and as a way to keep fit and meet other members of the community

Group Standard: Must be able to swim 50m unassisted and be able to swim in deep water (deep end of pool).

Training Schedule: 2 or 3 x 60 minute practices/week for 6 weeks

Dryland Training Schedule: 15 minutes activation before water sessions.

Description: The Winskill Dolphin Swim Club offers this Summer Camp fitness program as a great place for young swimmers to build on their skills and get introduced to competitive strokes starting with coordination, body awareness, the four swim strokes, and other basic competitive skills. This is a fun environment with emphasis on the social aspect of swimming with games and teamwork activities. This is a great time for them to discover the joys of swimming while being involved in an organized sport. If your swimmer was not registered with the Winskill Dolphins during the 2022-2023 swim season, an additional $32.00 will be charged for Swim BC and Swimming Canada fees.

Description: The Winskill Dolphins Swim Club offer this program focused on Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development Model FUNdamentals and Active Start! It emphasizes the need to teach young children basic athletic skills as a foundation to lifelong sport participation – both in and out of the water! Note: this is a survey and introduction class, not formal lessons. For 45 minutes your child will learn and practice floating, kicking, breathing, and rotation skills. We strive to create a level of comfort in and around the water for all children.
